Camille Minichino, a PhD in Physics, has written several titles in the Periodical Table Series including The Boric Acid Murder, The Nitrogen Murder, and The Oxygen Murder. Mark Coggins' newest release is Candy From Strangers. His mysteries are set in San Francisco. The plots involve high tech and software since he studied and worked in places like Netscape and Silicon Valley which influenced his writing. What's happening at the Almaden Library?
Harry Potter Magic Transforms Almaden Library and Community Center
San José Public Library will host a “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” Release Party from 10 p.m. to midnight on Friday, July 20 at Almaden Library and Community Center (6445 Camden Ave). To help local fans through the last couple of hours of nail-biting impatience before the release of the book, at 12:01 a.m. on Saturday, July 21, the library has planned fun activities recalling the characters and world of Hogwarts to keep fans entertained until the stroke of midnight.
When the clock strikes twelve, library customers—who are among the first 400 to have both reserved the standard print edition of the seventh book AND designated Almaden Library as their pickup point—will be able to check out their copy and immediately begin uncovering the answers to all the burning questions that have tantalized them from the beginning; chief among them:
Who will live and who will die?
Does Harry kill Voldemort?
Do Ron and Hermione get together?
Participants are welcome and encouraged to come in costume, but it is not a requirement. Minors 15 years of age and under must be accompanied by an adult; drop-offs are not permitted. Those who are eligible to check out their reserve copy of “Harry Potter and the Deathly Hallows” must have addressed all potential blocks on their library card account by 11:30 p.m. Fine or fee payments will be accepted by credit card only. No other library services will be available that evening.
P&T Theatre Puppets at the Almaden Branch Library
On Thursday, July 26, 2:30 p.m., the ever-popular P&T Puppet Theatre presents “The Adventures of Spider and Fly!” Follow the adventures of this dynamic duo as they seek to rescue Little Miss Muffet and other popular literary figures. Will they figure out the clues in time? This program is Peter Brizzi’s newest show and is guaranteed to entertain young and old alike. We are grateful to the Friends of the Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. Library who have generously provided the funds for this program.
Events
■ Family Story Time will be held on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s program room. There will be fun stories, songs, and finger plays geared for the whole family (no story time in August).
■ Preschool Story Times will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:15 a.m. in the library’s program room. “Mr. K” will be sharing stories, finger plays, songs and puppets, for children ages 3-5 and their caregivers (no story time in August).
■ Mother Goose Story Time is held on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Barbara Gilbert, children’s librarian, will present nursery rhymes, finger plays, stories and songs for children (12 months to 2 years) and their caregivers (no story time in August).
■ Saturdays, July 21, 28 & August 4 from 4 to 5 p.m., get personalized instruction from a friendly and knowledgeable volunteer. Questions regarding Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email, and all things Web or Internet related will be answered. This class is held in the library’s tech center and is limited to four participants; please register at the library’s information desk.
■ ‘Reading to Children’ volunteers will be available in the children’s area on Wednesdays from 11:30 a.m. to 12:30 p.m. and Thursdays from 12 to 1 p.m.
■ ESL Conversation Club is held Wednesdays from 12 to 1 p.m. in the library’s program room. Come practice your English speaking skills with our friendly conversation group.
■ Join us for a fun Adult Summer Reading Murder Mystery Party, Saturday, July 28 at 4 p.m. This murder mystery party will keep our adult summer reading sleuths on their collective toes.
■ On Thursday, August 2 at 3 p.m., Fratello Marionettes will present the delightful puppet play, Peter and the Wolf. Accompanied by the majestic music of Sergei Prokofiev, follow Peter on his remarkable journey of discovery. This program is guaranteed to entertain both young and old. This program is part of the Summer Reading Celebration and is made possible by the Friends of the Almaden Library.
■ On Friday, August 3 at 4 p.m., teens (ages 13-18) are invited to participate in our monthly Teens Reach meeting held in the library’s program room. Community service credits are given to participating students. Light refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Almaden Library.
■ Join our History Book Club Tuesday, August 7, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., to discuss Giles Milton’s “Nathaniel’s Nutmeg: or, the True and Incredible Adventures of the Spice Trader Who Changed the Course of History.” Tea and cookies will be served. This event takes place in the library’s program room.

Operation Good Shoes starts today.
The plan is simple: to collect used, clean shoes for Iraqi children. Barrels to collect gently used children’s shoes are now placed in all San José public libraries, including the Dr. Martin Luther King Jr. Library, for a period of three weeks starting today. The Masonic Lodge of Santa Clara (Liberty #299) will collect and process donations for shipment to Iraq.

Summer Reading Celebration Begins - Get a Clue @ your library
The Summer Reading Celebration, an eight-week program, starts Saturday, June 16 and concludes August 11. Reach each of the five reading milestones for a cumulative total of 30 hours of reading and earn fun prizes such as a magnifying glass, painting sheets, flashing L.E.D. ball, and a book of your choice.
This year Get a Clue @ your library serves children (birth through grade 5) and YNK @ your library serves teens (grades 6-12). During July, a separate component for adults, Summer Sleuthing @ your library, invites adults to read books and win prizes through weekly drawings at all San Jose Public Library locations. Prizes for adults include movie tickets and concession vouchers from Camera Cimema Theatres, as well as bookstore, restaurant, and coffee shop gift certificates.
As a special treat, there will be a series of fun-filled programs that will entertain and delight children of all ages. On Thursday, June 21, at 3 p.m., come and enjoy the remarkable musical talents of ZunZun. This ensemble celebrates the wide variety of musical expression in the various cultures of the Americas. This show explores our shared cultural and natural surroundings through music and sound. ZunZun invites audience members' participation to use clues embedded in the music and lyrics to solve a mystery! Their performances utilize physical comedy, audience participation, and remarkable musical ability. This lively show is perfect way to kickoff your Summer Reading Celebration.
On Thursday, June 28 at 3 p.m., Miss Nancy, Mr. K., and friends present "Get a Clue Crew @ Your Library." There will be stories, magic, music, and more mysterious happenings. You won’t want to miss the hilarity and crazy antics of our Get a Clue Crew.
A fun “Magic Workshop for Teens” will take place, Thursday, July 5 at 3 p.m. in the community room. Come and demonstrate your favorite magic tricks and share the inside scoop on how the trick was done. The magic you share could be card tricks, sleight of hand tricks or any other type of magic you enjoy performing.
On Thursday, July 12 at 3 p.m. enjoy the “Short Attention Span Circus” with Jean-Paul Valjean. Jean-Paul was born in Algeria and he began his training in the circus arts as an acrobat and contortionist. At the young age of 5, he made his debut as the youngest high-wire performer in the world in London, England. This was the start of a long and distinguished career showcasing his talents in numerous European and American circuses and variety shows.
The goal of the Summer Reading Celebration program is to help our young people to become enthusiastic and proficient readers. We are grateful to the Friends of the Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. Library who have generously provided the funds for the program’s prizes and incentives.
Events
■ Family Story Time will be held on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s program room. There will be fun stories, songs, and finger plays geared for the whole family.
■ Preschool Story Times will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:15 a.m. in the library’s program room. “Mr. K” will be sharing stories, finger plays, songs and puppets, for children ages 3-5 and their caregivers (no story time on Friday, June 22 – library opens at 1 p.m.).
■ Mother Goose Story Time is held on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Barbara Gilbert, children’s librarian, will present nursery rhymes, finger plays, stories and songs for children (12 months to 2 years) and their caregivers (no story time on Friday, June 22 – library opens at 1 p.m.).
■ Saturdays, June 16, 23, and 30 from 4 to 5 p.m., get personalized instruction from a friendly and knowledgeable volunteer. Questions regarding Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email, and all things Web or Internet related will be answered. This class is held in the library’s tech center and is limited to four participants; please register at the library’s information desk.
■ Blogging 101 with Blogger.com – On Tuesday, June 19 at 11 a.m. we are pleased to offer a class on how to set up your own personal blog. A blog is a quick and easy way publish your content on the Web. Learn how to get your own free blog with Blogger.com. The class is limited to the first 12 patrons. Basic Web skills are recommended. Class held in the library’s Tech Center.
■ Wednesday, June 27, from 6 to 7 p.m., get personalized instruction in Persian from an experienced computer volunteer. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email, and other Internet resources will be explained and demonstrated. This class is held in the library’s tech center and is limited to four participants; register at the library’s information desk.
■ ‘Reading to Children’ volunteers will be available in the children’s area on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Thursdays from 12 to 1 p.m.
■ ESL Conversation Club is held Wednesdays from 12 to 1 p.m. in the library’s program room. Come practice your English speaking skills with our friendly conversation group.
■ Join our History Book Club Tuesday, July 3, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., to discuss Patricia Cornwell’s “Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper – Case Closed.” Tea and cookies will be served. This event takes place in the library’s program room.
■ On Friday, July 6 at 4 p.m., teens (ages 13-18) are invited to participate in our monthly Teens Reach meeting held in the library’s program room. Our guest speakers from the Art of Living foundation and will be exploring the topic of “Stress Reduction for Teens.” In addition, teens are encouraged to volunteer this summer to help run our annual Summer Reading Celebration. At the Almaden Branch, we hope to sign-up over 2,200 participants in this significant literacy outreach. Community service credits are given to participating students. Light refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Almaden Branch Library.

The Summer Reading Celebration, an eight-week program, starts Saturday, June 16 and concludes August 11. Reach each of the five reading milestones for a cumulative total of 30 hours of reading and earn fun prizes such as a magnifying glass, painting sheets, flashing L.E.D. ball, and a book of your choice.
This year Get a Clue @ your library serves children (birth through grade 5) and YNK @ your library serves teens (grades 6-12). During July, a separate component for adults, Summer Sleuthing @ your library, invites adults to read books and win prizes through weekly drawings at all San Jose Public Library locations. Prizes for adults include movie tickets and concession vouchers from Camera Cimema Theatres, as well as bookstore, restaurant, and coffee shop gift certificates.
As a special treat, there will be a series of fun-filled programs that will entertain and delight children of all ages. On Thursday, June 21, at 3 p.m., come and enjoy the remarkable musical talents of ZunZun. This ensemble celebrates the wide variety of musical expression in the various cultures of the Americas. This show explores our shared cultural and natural surroundings through music and sound. ZunZun invites audience members' participation to use clues embedded in the music and lyrics to solve a mystery! Their performances utilize physical comedy, audience participation, and remarkable musical ability. This lively show is perfect way to kickoff your Summer Reading Celebration.
On Thursday, June 28 at 3 p.m., Miss Nancy, Mr. K., and friends present "Get a Clue Crew @ Your Library." There will be stories, magic, music, and more mysterious happenings. You won’t want to miss the hilarity and crazy antics of our Get a Clue Crew.
A fun “Magic Workshop for Teens” will take place, Thursday, July 5 at 3 p.m. in the community room. Come and demonstrate your favorite magic tricks and share the inside scoop on how the trick was done. The magic you share could be card tricks, sleight of hand tricks or any other type of magic you enjoy performing.
On Thursday, July 12 at 3 p.m. enjoy the “Short Attention Span Circus” with Jean-Paul Valjean. Jean-Paul was born in Algeria and he began his training in the circus arts as an acrobat and contortionist. At the young age of 5, he made his debut as the youngest high-wire performer in the world in London, England. This was the start of a long and distinguished career showcasing his talents in numerous European and American circuses and variety shows.
The goal of the Summer Reading Celebration program is to help our young people to become enthusiastic and proficient readers. We are grateful to the Friends of the Dr. Martin Luther King. Jr. Library who have generously provided the funds for the program’s prizes and incentives.
Events
■ Family Story Time will be held on Wednesdays at 6:30 p.m. in the library’s program room. There will be fun stories, songs, and finger plays geared for the whole family.
■ Preschool Story Times will be held on Tuesdays and Fridays at 11:15 a.m. in the library’s program room. “Mr. K” will be sharing stories, finger plays, songs and puppets, for children ages 3-5 and their caregivers (no story time on Friday, June 22 – library opens at 1 p.m.).
■ Mother Goose Story Time is held on Fridays at 10:30 a.m. Barbara Gilbert, children’s librarian, will present nursery rhymes, finger plays, stories and songs for children (12 months to 2 years) and their caregivers (no story time on Friday, June 22 – library opens at 1 p.m.).
■ Saturdays, June 16, 23, and 30 from 4 to 5 p.m., get personalized instruction from a friendly and knowledgeable volunteer. Questions regarding Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email, and all things Web or Internet related will be answered. This class is held in the library’s tech center and is limited to four participants; please register at the library’s information desk.
■ Blogging 101 with Blogger.com – On Tuesday, June 19 at 11 a.m. we are pleased to offer a class on how to set up your own personal blog. A blog is a quick and easy way publish your content on the Web. Learn how to get your own free blog with Blogger.com. The class is limited to the first 12 patrons. Basic Web skills are recommended. Class held in the library’s Tech Center.
■ Wednesday, June 27, from 6 to 7 p.m., get personalized instruction in Persian from an experienced computer volunteer. Word, Excel, PowerPoint, Email, and other Internet resources will be explained and demonstrated. This class is held in the library’s tech center and is limited to four participants; register at the library’s information desk.
■ ‘Reading to Children’ volunteers will be available in the children’s area on Wednesdays from 11 a.m. to 12 p.m. and Thursdays from 12 to 1 p.m.
■ ESL Conversation Club is held Wednesdays from 12 to 1 p.m. in the library’s program room. Come practice your English speaking skills with our friendly conversation group.
■ Join our History Book Club Tuesday, July 3, 6:30 to 7:30 p.m., to discuss Patricia Cornwell’s “Portrait of a Killer: Jack the Ripper – Case Closed.” Tea and cookies will be served. This event takes place in the library’s program room.
■ On Friday, July 6 at 4 p.m., teens (ages 13-18) are invited to participate in our monthly Teens Reach meeting held in the library’s program room. Our guest speakers from the Art of Living foundation and will be exploring the topic of “Stress Reduction for Teens.” In addition, teens are encouraged to volunteer this summer to help run our annual Summer Reading Celebration. At the Almaden Branch, we hope to sign-up over 2,200 participants in this significant literacy outreach. Community service credits are given to participating students. Light refreshments are provided by the Friends of the Almaden Branch Library.

Our one-year anniversary's coming up! Save the date: this coming Saturday, May 19, from 1:30 PM.
Come and help us celebrate the first anniversary of the Almaden Library and Community Center. On Saturday, May 19, 1:30 p.m. we will have a special anniversary gathering in the courtyard with Councilmember Nancy Pyle, and other city officials as our special guests. Highlighting the celebration will be the dedication of the “Ohlone Woman” bronze sculpture by Lisa Reinertson, and the “Teaching Stones” an exterior sculptural seating element by art students from the Academy of Art University. The “Teaching Stones” is an inspirational work commemorating the life and contribution of the late Doris Dillon, a respected teacher and community leader. On Friday, May 18, we will have some special treats at our regular story times (10:30 a.m. and 11:15 a.m.) and a PlayStation2 GameFest, 2:30 to 5 p.m. for teens. Refreshments for the two-day celebration are provided by the Friends of the Almaden Library.

Kim Addonizio Reads from Her Poetry
A passionate poet, fiction writer and teacher, Kim Addonizio has authored four collections of poetry, most recently, What Is This Thing Called Love. Kim Addonizio Reads from Her Poetry
A passionate poet, fiction writer and teacher, Kim Addonizio has authored four collections of poetry, most recently, What Is This Thing Called Love. Her book of poems, Tell Me, was a finalist for the 2000 National Book Award. Her first novel, Little Beauties, was published in 2005. Ms. Addonizio has been honored with a Guggenheim fellowship, two fellowships from the National Endowment for the Arts, a Pushcart Prize and a Commonwealth Club Poetry Medal. Did you know? Tomorrow is Start Walking at Work Day!
This Wednesday, April 25th, is Start Walking at Work Day, promoting physical activity at the workplace in an effort to help Americans live longer, healthier, lives. A Harvard alumni study in the New England Journal of Medicine shows that most people can gain 2 hours of life expectancy for every 1 hour of vigorous exercise. Studies also show walking to be the form of exercise that people are least likely to quit. Take a break and take a walk!

This is an exact digital copy of the original document that was published by the Federal Government and covers the arrivals in 35 ports in 14 states and the District of Columbia. Falcon Scope temporarily out of service.
The Falcon Scope, recently installed on the 8th floor at the King Library, has been taken down temporarily pending the arrival of parts intended to further stabilize the installation. The City webcam, which can be viewed from library public Internet access computers as well as Internet-capable home computers, remains the only option at this time that allows an actual view of the nest from a remote position. City Hall Peregrine Falcons Now Viewable Live Online!
The City of San José, in conjunction with the UC Santa Cruz Predatory Bird Research Group (SCPBRG), present Falcon Cam, a live, web-streaming camera trained on the city hall peregrine falcons’ nest box high atop City Hall. And in that nest box are three speckled salmon-colored eggs. Fans of City Hall Falcons, Clara and Jose, can now log onto the falcon cam at http://falconcam.sanjoseca.gov/nest and watch them as they incubate eggs and, hopefully, hatch their young.
In conjunction with the new webcam, the King Library Co-Managers agreed to allow installation of a spotting scope on the eighth floor of the King Library with a view toward the ledge above the nest box habitat. This telescope, generously donated by Orion Telescopes and Binoculars of Watsonville, California with the great coordination of the San Jose Public Library Foundation, will be available to the public during open hours of King Library (keep in mind the eighth floor is designated a "quiet" area). It should be installed and available by the end of today.

Several college-age men posing as San Jose State University rugby players have been knocking on doors soliciting donations. The men claim to be neighborhood residents selling children's books and they say proceeds from the book sales will be used to fund a team trip abroad. The suspects have been knocking on doors in the Rose Garden (San Jose), Los Altos, San Mateo and Berkeley areas.
For the record, the SJSU rugby club team is not raising money, and these men are not team members. If you have provided a check to men matching this description, call your local police department and your bank. To contact an SJSU representative, please send an e-mail clubsports@union.sjsu.edu.

Biography Resource Center content updates.
We feature a number of various online databases (at http://sjlibrary.org/research/databases/index.htm). If you're trying to write a paper about a person, the Biography Resource Center is an excellent resource, and it's updated frequently. The BIORC now includes biographies on more than 340,000 people from antiquity through the present day. The next time you need biographical information or a picture of a famous person, remember to try out the Biography Resource Center.

Volunteers needed for Children's Faire, on April 28, 2007.
We are looking for enthusiastic and energetic volunteers to assist with our annual Children's Faire. The Faire is a signature event for families with young children with an annual attendance of 5,000 people; a day of educational and fun family activities. Volunteer opportunities for this special event include assisting with event set up as well as helping with programs and activities at the Faire. March is National Nutrition Month!
We're celebrating with a series of workshops entitled "Snack Smart - Parent / Child (grades 4-8) Workshop". At these informative workshops, your child will learn tips for healthy snacks in a fun, hands-on environment. S/he’ll also learn how exercise and good nutrition will help make him or her more alert and successful in school. These workshops are geared for children in grades 4-8. "Snack Smart" is co-sponsored by San Jose Public Library and San Jose State University’s Nutrition and Food Science Department with financial support from a Kaiser Permanente "Community Benefit Grant." The Public Library Association (PLA) is holding its national symposium in San Jose on March 2 through March 4. This is the first time it has been held outside of Chicago. Silicon Valley Reads: Invisible Mexicans of Deer Canyon Film Showing & Discussion
Join us for a film showing followed by a discussion of John Carlos Frey's documentary, Invisible Mexicans of Deer Canyon. Producer and Director Frey, a native of Mexico, spent over a year visiting and living amongst the migrants of Deer Canyon, traveling alone and carrying all of his sound, camera and lighting equipment. Many of the migrants were initially reluctant to talk to Mr. Frey. As his trips to the canyon became more frequent, the migrants began to trust and invite him into their homes for a personal look at their lives. Mr. Frey made his directorial debut in The Gatekeeper which garnered ten national and international film festival awards, including Best Film or Best Director at nine different festivals. He has just completed the feature film script for The Lone Star, the true-life story of the first Mexican-American to play college football in Texas - Inez Perez in 1963. Mr. Frey's work has also been recognized by Amnesty International, The Anti-Defamation League, Human Rights Watch, National Immigration Forum, National Center for Farmworker Health, The League of United Latin American Citizens, The National Council of La Raza (NCLR), The Joan B. Kroc Institute of Peace and Justice, and the Hispanic Congressional Caucus in Washington D.C. For more information call (408) 808-2397.

Commemorating the Japanese American Internment
Remarks by Congressman Mike Honda; a book signing featuring Felicia Hoshino, illustrator of "A Place Where Sunflowers Grow" and storytelling by Megumi form the cornerstone of this special remembrance. Doors open at 6:15 PM and light refreshments will be available, along with resources for educators. A limited number of free copies of "A Place Where Sunflowers Grow" will be available for those who RSVP to CBPintern@childrensbookpress.org (or call 415.821.3080 x 10). Come early or stay late to view displays honoring "Day of Remembrance" throughout the King Library and art from "A Place Where Sunflowers Grow" exhibited in the Cultural Heritage Center, 5th floor.
