Small space? No problem! Join the Master Gardeners and the Almaden Library to learn how to maximize your space through container gardening. Grow vegetables, fruit trees, annuals, succulents and just about anything else your heart desires. You will learn about companion planting, fertilizing, the proper soil and irrigation techniques. Bring a favorite 8" pot if you have one to start your garden. A limited supply of pots will be available if you don't have one to bring.

Almaden Teen Puppet Show and Readers Theater - Rehearsal

This is a great opportunity to show your creative talents and be part of our Almaden Teen Puppet and Marionette Theater. The rehearsals are important and if you want to be in the Saturday, August 8 performance (3 p.m.) you need to be at all of the rehearsals (July 24, 31 and Aug 7). Environmental Action Through Eating: Best Bang for the Bite

Laura Stec believes that, "One of the most positive effects you can have on your environment begins on your dinner plate." The final event in the summer FOOD FOR THOUGHT series features Laura Stec, as she talks passionately about the many topics covered in her book: Cool Cuisine: Taking the Bite Out of Global Warming. She will present a mini-culinary "how to class," featuring ways to move toward making food choices that benefit our bodies AND the environment. Laura is a San Francisco Bay Area chef who enjoys teaching about the artistry, health and energetics of cooking. She has 37 years combined experience in the food and environmental sectors and currently speaks and consults on ways to incorporate regionally responsible cuisine into institutional food systems, or what she calls green cuisine practices. She promotes this message throughout her many endeavors: private chef and caterer, Culinary Health Educator for Kaiser Permanente Medical Group, Consulting chef with the International Culinary School at the Art Institute of CA, Acterra (a Palo Alto environmental organization) and Eco-Eaters, one of the first food & environment education programs in the U.S. She will also create a California Cheese Platter for our taste and enjoyment. Join the Almaden Library for the second event in the FOOD FOR THOUGHT series that focuses on eating healthier while supporting the community and the environment on Saturday, June 6th at the Almaden Library, 11:00 a.m.

Our presenter for this event, Bari Mandelbaum, is a Certified Holistic Nutritionist, Herbalist & Wellness Consultant. She attended Stanford University and Bauman College acquiring four levels of Nutrition credentials. Her professional services include pathways to proper diet, use of herbs, exercise, vitamins and supplements, menu-planning and lifestyle improvement to maintain and promote optimal health. She believes that great health is possible at all ages, sizes and physical ability. Bari says, “I want to improve the way people feel by helping them improve the way they eat, live and make choices.”

Bari will speak on the importance of eating healthy foods for healthier bodies and general well-being. She will include a discussion on organic vs. conventionally-grown foods, whole foods vs. processed foods, home-cooking (slow food) vs. fast food, and very importantly, how to incorporate better food-buying and eating habits that are realistic and practical for the everyday working person.

Music and Snoopy at the King Library!

Attention Beethoven and /or Peanuts fans, there is a great new exhibit coming to Special Collections on May 1st, see below for details…

On May 1, the exhibit "Schulz's Beethoven, Schroeder's Muse" will open in the special collections exhibit lobby and the Beethoven Center on the fifth floor of the King Library. The Beethoven Center is very excited about this collaboration with the Charles M. Schulz Museum and Research Center in Santa Rosa. The exhibit features a selection of Schulz's many Peanuts strips about Schroeder's obsession with Beethoven, including some original art work and artifacts from both collections. Audio wands will be available for listening to the music that appears in the strips.

SJPL recently subscribed to a fun and useful database called NoveList. If you have a favorite author, you can look them up and find out what other authors may write in a similar style. For example, under mystery/suspense writer Jeffery Deaver, Ridley Pearson was listed as another author that might be popular with Deaver fans. As a Deaver fan, I found that Pearson was in fact a very fine addition to my reading choices.

When you log in to NoveList, you will need to have your library card number handy, and then prepare to spend some time exploring the site to find something new to read. If you have any questions, give us a call, and we'd be happy to walk you through it.

For February, the ESL Book Club will be reading Hush, by Jacqueline Woodson. Toswiah Green's father witnessed a murder, and testified against two police officers that he worked with. The entire family is forced to flee for their lives, under the witness protection program. Everyone has to change their names, and leave everyone and everything that they knew and loved behind. Toswiah becomes Evie, and is forced to lie about her past while she tries to find her way in a new city and school. Her family also undergoes some serious changes, as her mother becomes very religious, her father is depressed, and her sister is attempting to leave home early. Readers that have struggled with finding their identity in a new and strange place may be able to relate to Toswiah/Evie's experiences. All adult and teen ESL learners are invited to attend. VTA is the ideal and hassle-free transportation alternative to all your holiday celebrations on New Year’s Eve. VTA will be offering free service on all light rail and bus lines from 7:00 p.m. Wednesday, December 31 until 3:59 a.m. Thursday, January 1, 2009. VTA will operate on a regular weekday schedule on Wednesday, December 24 and Wednesday, December 31 and a Sunday/Holiday schedule Thursday, December 25 and Thursday, January 1.

Keeping Faith

For the month of January, the Almaden Book Buddies will discuss Keeping Faith, by Jodi Picoult. "When seven-year-old Faith White and her mother, Mariah, swing by the house on the way to ballet class, they find that Daddy is home and he's brought a playmate. This is not the first time he's been caught cheating. After the fuss and feathers have settled and Dad has moved out, Faith begins talking to an imaginary friend who, it seems, is God. And God is not male but female. Faith is able to effect miraculous cures and is also occasionally afflicted with stigmata. When the media gets wind of this, the circus begins. The local rabbi takes an interest (Faith and Mariah are technically Jewish), and the local Catholic priest pays several inquiring visits. There is also a gaggle of psychologists. Throw in a professional atheist for the romance angle and a vicious custody fight with an egomaniacal lawyer, and you have a riveting read. Picot gets better and better with each book" (Library Journal). All readers are invited to attend. This event takes place on Tuesday, January 6th, at 1:30 in the afternoon.

History Book Club--Tues, Dec. 16th, 6:30 p.m.

Join the History Book Club in discussing Brutal Journey: The Epic Story of the First Crossing of North America by Paul Schneider. "...would-be conquistador Pánfilo de Narváez was given another chance by the king of Spain, who awarded him governorship over the entire Gulf Coast of the modern United States. But Narváez's luck was no better this time: the expedition, which arrived in 1528, was a complete disaster. Out of the 400 men who went ashore in Florida, only four made it to Mexico eight years later, long after Narváez himself was lost at sea in a makeshift boat" (Publisher's Weekly). Written using limited documentation, and rife with adventure mixed with colonialism, Brutal Journey promises to offer good topics for discussion. All history enthusiasts are invited to attend.

Spare the Air

The Bay Area Air District has issued a Winter Spare the Air Alert for Tuesday, November 25, 2008, which bans wood burning both indoors and outdoors through noon tomorrow.

Air quality in the Bay Area is forecast to be unhealthy. It is illegal for Bay Area residents and businesses to burn wood or manufactured firelogs in fireplaces, wood stoves and inserts, pellet stoves, and outdoor fire-pits. This wood-burning ban will be in effect for Alameda, Contra Costa, Marin, Napa, San Francisco, San Mateo, Santa Clara, southern Sonoma and southwestern Solano Counties.

You will receive an AirAlert email each day that a Winter Spare the Air Alert is in effect.

Winter air pollution is mainly caused by small particle pollution or particulate matter (PM) from wood smoke. Smoke from wood-burning fires is linked to illnesses such as asthma, bronchitis and lung disease, and is especially harmful for children and the elderly.

ESL Book Club reads A Christmas Carol

The ESL Book Club will be discussing one of the most famous Christmas classics of all time, A Christmas Carol by Charles Dickens, on Thursday, December 18th, 1-2 p.m. in the Program Room. The writing is challenging, but the book is very short, less than ½" thick! Also, you probably know the story already, which will make it even more enjoyable. You may want to read the book, and then watch one of the many versions of the movie. Two fun versions are The Muppet Christmas Carol (starring the Muppets!), or Scrooged, which is set in the 1980’s and stars comedian Bill Murray. Also, on Wednesday, December 3rd, at 4 p.m., the Traveling Lantern Production company will be performing A Christmas Carol in the Community Room of the Almaden Branch Library and Community Center. That event is open to the entire family!

The Almaden Book Buddies will discuss one of Bill Bryson's funniest travelogues, In a Sunburned Country, which is about traveling through Australia. One of the most memorable chapters is dedicated to all of the things that are lethal in that great country! Bill Bryson manages to deliver a lot of laughs while also sharing the beauty of the landscape. Learn to "talk" to your baby with teacher William P. White. (Babies are most welcome, though not required.) If your baby is napping or cranky, it is perfectly fine to come without your baby because we are teaching you, the parents, baby sign language. This workshop introduces basic baby signs that are based on American Sign Language (ASL) and is designed for parents with hearing babies who range in age from birth to 18 months old. You will learn about the latest research and all the tricks on how to teach your baby to sign. Fun activities and songs will show you how easy it can be to integrate simple signs into your everyday.

Moon Struck - View the Moon with the San Jose Astronomical Association

There will be a fun moon related craft program starting Thursday, November 6th at 4:45 p.m. and ending at 5:10 p.m. This craft project is geared for school age children and will be held in the library's program room. At 5:15 p.m. there will be a fun puppet program held in the Children's area and at 5:45 we'll break for an opportunity to check out additional stargazing books and materials. When the library closes at 6:00 p.m. (weather permitting) we'll have the opportunity to observe the night sky courtesy of the San Jose Astronomical Association. Chief astronomer, Jim Van Nuland commented "we'll have lots of good stuff to show -- a nice quarter moon, bright Jupiter, faint Uranus, the Ring Nebula, the Great Globular Cluster in Hercules, colorful double star Albireo in Cygnus, probably a galaxy or two if the air is clear enough." Imagine that you could not read a bus schedule or interpret the directions on a medicine bottle. Please consider becoming a volunteer tutor for the adult literacy program, Partners in Reading, at the San José Public Library. The experience is rewarding and exciting. You will be working with an English-speaking adult who is 18 years or older. One-on-one tutoring will take place within branches of the San José Public Library and other public sites in San José.

Read or write at the 12th grade level or above
Attend 14 hours of tutor training

Two hours tutoring per week for a minimum of six months (twice a week is best)

He has performed the "Concierto de Aranjuez" for the Ambassador of Spain, given a solo performance for Senator John Kerry, and in 2005 was honored to perform as a soloist in Carnegie Hall. He was a finalist in the 2006 Christopher Parkening International Guitar Competition, the world’s preeminent classical guitar competition. The Unreleased Beatles details the incredible breadth of music the Beatles recorded but did not release, as well as film footage of the group that hasn't been made commercially available. Beatles expert Richie Unterberger examines an array of material, including unreleased studio outtakes, BBC radio recordings from 1962-1965, live concert performances, home demo recordings, fan club Christmas recordings, and other informal demos done outside of EMI studios. The wealth of unreleased gems encompasses The Beatles' entire career, from a recording the Quarrymen made on July 6, 1957 (aka "the day John met Paul"), right up to outtakes from the final sessions of Let It Be in 1970. Parent Workshop - Music and Movement with Preschoolers

Music and Movement with Preschoolers - Parent Workshop will be featured Thursday, April 17, 11 a.m. to 11:30 a.m. Children love music and both music and movement stimulate the brain. Learn to use simple rhythm instruments and techniques to keep a beat. This parent workshop will immediately follow the regularly scheduled Toddler Story Time that starts at 10:30 AM.

Friends of the Almaden Library - Spring Book Sale

Almaden Friends' Spring Book Sale – an event you won’t want to miss. On Saturday, April 19 from 9 a.m. to 3 p.m., the Almaden Branch Library is having its huge Spring Book Sale. This popular event is sponsored by the Friends of the Almaden Branch Libray will be staged in the large community room next to the library's entrance. At this book sale there will be a large selection of gently used and sometimes new books covering a wide range of topics and interests. Entertainment videos, DVDs, CDs and cassettes will also be available for purchase. There will be a special "Bag of Books" sale from 2 to 3 p.m. All proceeds benefit Almaden Branch Library programs and services. If you love books, you won't want to miss this event. San Jose Teen Idol Contest at Almaden Library

Almaden’s San Jose Teen Idol Contest will be held on Saturday, April 26 from 2 p.m. to 3:30 p.m. If you are 12-19 years old and live in San Jose, you can compete in the San Jose Public Library's singing competition! Please register at the Almaden Branch Library by April 25 at the library's Information Desk. First prize will win $50.00, second prize $25.00 and third prize $10.00. The first place winner will be one of the finalists to compete for the grand prize downtown on Saturday, May 17th.

Tomorrow, Saturday April 5th, from 2-4 join the Almaden Library and Community Center for a dedication of historical New Almaden photographs!

We will dedicate historic photos of New Almaden, a local history display, and a collection of materials of local historical interest. Following the dedication, docents will be stationed throughout the facility to add additional interpretation and information regarding the history of New Almaden. Displays and interpretation made possible by the efforts of the Committee for Almaden Historical Awareness and the New Almaden Quicksilver Country Park Association. This event takes place in the Large Community Room.

Free Income Tax Assistance (V.I.T.A.)--King Library

Free Income Tax Assistance is provided by V.I.T.A. every Saturday, beginning February 9 through April 5, 2008. The V.I.T.A. program will offer free income tax assistance for low income, disabled, elderly, or limited English-speaking persons. No appointments are necessary. Please join the History Book Club at the Almaden Library to read Part I of Doris Kearns Goodwin's work, Team of Rivals: the Political Genius of Abraham Lincoln. One reviewer states that "this engaging work reveals why'Lincoln's road to success was longer, more tortuous, and far less likely' than the other men and why, when opportunity beckoned, Lincoln was "the best prepared to answer the call." The Adventures of Eddie Fung - Slide Show & Talk, Edited by his wife Judy Yung
"The Adventures of Eddie Fung" tells the story of how a Chinatown kid reinvented himself as a Texas cowboy before going overseas with the U.S. Army. On the way to the Philippines, his battalion is captured by the Japanese in Java and sent to Burma to undertake the impossible task of building a railroad through 262 miles of tropical jungle - a project made famous by the film The Bridge on the River Kwai. Working under brutal slave labor conditions, the men completed the railroad in fourteen months at the cost of 12,500 POW and 70,000 Asian civilian lives. Eddie lived to tell how his background helped him to survive captivity as a Japanese POW and how his experiences as the sole Chinese-American member of the most decorated Texan unit of any war all shaped his later life. Ruthanne Lum McCunn, author of God of Luck, describes this book as "a vibrant, compelling portrait of what it means to be a Chinese American, a survivor, a mensch." Hosted by General Collections. ESL Adult Book Club

Yesterday, we had our very first meeting of our all new ESL Book Club! This Book Club is open to all ESL adults who would like to improve their English reading skills, and who would like to spend time with other learners in a fun environment to discuss what they have read. The atmosphere is friendly and informal. So far, our group has eight members, and we have the space for a lot more! Our next meeting is Thursday, February 21st from 1-2 p.m. We will be reading Avi's book, The End of the Beginning: being the adventures of a small snail (and an even smaller ant). During the presentation, they will explain how to use SmartVoter and EasyVoter to obtain information on candidates, issues, and ballot measures.
